What Makes Persian Tea Unique?

Persian tea is known for its deep color, balanced strength, and rich aroma. Unlike many teas that rely on a single blend, Iranian-style tea often mixes different black teas to reach the right flavor profile. The goal is clear: create a warm, full-bodied tea that is smooth, not bitter.

The brewing method plays a big role. Persians traditionally use a double kettle or a samovar, allowing the tea to steep slowly and develop its signature aroma.

How to Brew Persian Tea (Step-by-Step)

  1. Boil fresh water. Always start with fresh, cold water. Reboiled water loses oxygen and weakens flavor.
  2. Add tea leaves to the teapot. Use 1–2 teaspoons per person. A mix of strong Assam tea plus a milder black tea works great.
  3. Pour boiling water over the tea. Fill the teapot about halfway and let the leaves bloom for 1 minute.
  4. Fill the teapot fully. Add more hot water and place the teapot on low heat (or on top of the samovar).
  5. Let it brew slowly. Steep for 10–15 minutes. Persian tea must not be rushed.

Your tea concentrate is now ready. Mix one part tea concentrate with hot water to taste.

Getting the Perfect Color

Persians judge tea by its color: deep red, amber, or golden. The key to controlling tea color is:

  • Brewing time — longer = darker
  • Tea blend — stronger leaves give a deeper red
  • Water quality — minerals affect clarity

If your tea becomes too dark or bitter, simply reduce steeping time or use a milder blend.

Adjusting Strength & Aroma

Persian tea should smell floral and warm, never burnt or overly smoky. To adjust aroma:

  • Add cardamom for gentle warmth
  • Add rose buds for floral notes
  • Add saffron for color and rich aroma

These additions should be used lightly so the tea flavor remains balanced.
